Laser vs IPL hair removal

The key difference between laser and IPL is the type of light. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a broadband pulsed light source, whereas laser is a monochromatic coherent light source. Both methods target the melanin in the hair follicle and permanent results can be expected from both. Professional laser treatment is working more selective and therefore the very high energy will focus on the hair follicle rather than surrounding skin. Therefore Professional laser will lead to fast results as well as being suitable to darker skin tones. Energy, frequency and hair color are all determining factors in the efficacy of the treatment, while the light source, whether it is a laser or an intense pulsed flash light plays a minor role.

WHO'S THE BEST CANDIDATE?

1. You have the pain tolerance to deal with the minor discomfort of the treatments, the sensation is similar to a snapping rubber band.

2. You have dark hair and light skin. Laser hair removal targets the melanin in the hair and skin. Therefore, the best candidates for this procedure are people with a lighter skin tone and dark hair.

3. You are interested in longer-term results for hair removal. While the treatment doesn’t offer a completely permanent fix, it has been proven to provide permanent hair reduction at different levels of effectiveness.

4. You accept the fact that results may vary from one person to another. It is most effective for people with light skin and dark hair due to the nature of the procedure. However, in some cases, even individuals within this group do not respond well to this type of treatment.

However, if the following criteria apply to you, you may not be a good candidate for this procedure:

  • You have a tattoo located on the treatment area.

  • You have dark skin and light blonde or red hair.

  • You do not want to risk not having a 100% guarantee of success.

  • You are skipping or not complying with treatment session.

  • You are impatient.
